Capturing that spark – 3 techniques for creativity

If you’re anything like me your children will be a constant source of inspiration for your creative endeavours. Little H is just starting in with the baby talk. The other day she babbled ‘mamma’. She didn’t mean me, she was just babbling but it still made my heart sing to hear it coming from her tiny lips. And the sound of her voice when she is ‘talking’ not yelling or squealing is just so soft and sweet I can hardly stand it.

This new milestone has riled me up with creativity and I’m desperate to capture it, as like everything else in my mind, it will be fleeting. Here is what I’ve found helps at times like this.

1) Journaling

Keeping a journal for recording all the emotions of motherhood will certainly preserve them as well as allow the opportunity to explore them in depth. Let yourself write freely without worry for grammar and punctuation. You are trying to capture the moment for yourself, not for anyone else. The important part is to do it, it doesn’t have to be perfect.

2) Snap it

I’ve taken gigs worth of digital photos and I find myself dressing little H up and staging her so she can be as cute as she can possible be. These photo sessions are fun and I always love the end result but I’ve decided to snap a quick picture just after she’s done something that’s sparked me. So what if she has food on her face, so what if she’s just in her pajamas. These shots will go on the wall in my workspace and ignite those creative feelings for me in the place where the creating gets done.

3) Do it together

Include your kids in the creative process. Have them fingerpaint and then use the image as a background page for your scrapbook. Let them push the button on your camera and see what gets captured. Involve them in picking out your next fabric or yarn. When your kids have been a part of the creative process, the end result will have that much more meaning.
