Calgary Event – Tricia Dower reading Silent Girl

Tricia Dower is coming to Calgary to read from her new book Silent Girl. She’ll be at McNally Robinson downtown on May 29th and the reading starts at 7pm. I’m so excited to go and hear Tricia read. I ‘met’ her online through a writer’s forum and have enjoyed her work immensely so meeting her in real life will be a treat.

Her book is a collection of 8 short stories inspired by Shakespearian plays.

SILENT GIRL’s insightful and unflinching stories portray girls and women dealing with a range of contemporary issues: sex trafficking, kidnapping, forced marriage, racism, violence, family dynamics and the fluid boundaries of gender.

Join me at McNally’s on the 29th, it’s sure to be a wonderful event. If you’d like more info, check out her website www.TriciaDower.com where you can find discussion guides for each of the stories – a perfect resource for teachers and book groups. See you there!

    If I could I would.

I met two of my favoured authors at McNally Robinson’s readings; Jack Whyte and George R.R. Martin.
    I really enjoyed those readings.

Prairie Ink, the little restaurant on the second floor is a preety cool place in itself, too.

Liked to have come, but it’s 2,000 miles away.

I had said something on Charles Gramlich’s blog about taking someone’s plot “envelope” to produce a story.

Well she went to the best.

But then I hear Shakespeare had gone to Seneca as a model.

So the Bard had gone to others for inspiration as well?

Well, yeah, yeah. But he did everything in first draft, no rewrites. So it was Willie S.who was crafting the plays.
    And how he could craft!

Well it would be a bit of a drive for me so I probably won’t be there. But sounds like fun. I hope you have a good time.

Thanks for the plug, Heather! It’ll be great to meet meet you and visit Calgary again.

You’re right, Ivan, I went to the best. It’s amazing how the themes Shakespeare wrote about so long ago resonate in contemporary life.
