“I suspect that every writer
is secretly writing for someone.”
Obviously, this could translate to any medium. So who do you create for?
Do you agree with this statement?
Personally, I think that every artist secretly creates for themselves. To express themselves. To share themselves. To challenge and know themselves. I do lots of things for other people but there are only a few things I do solely for me. Indulging in my creativity is one of them.
If you’ve written about creativity this week, please share your link below. I’d love to see what you’ve been up to!

I went off and thought about it for awhile and I’m back..
and I still can’t figure it out. That’s a very thought provoking quote and I have to think about it even more.
For sure – when I’m making jewelry, taking a photograph, knitting a scarf, or making up a recipe for something to eat, it’s always partly for me. I don’t want to make things that I don’t like, after all. With jewelry, because I sell my work, I am also thinking about my customer: is this piece comfortable to wear, is it stylish, and can I make it at a reasonable price, among other things. But mostly, would I wear it – if the answer is no, it probably isn’t a good product for me to make.
OK, I’m more the grand auntie than the mom, but I still play with kids every day. I create for me, for the future, for the fun of it. I make art cloth and art quilts, interactive museum exhibits and programs (on occasion), and I’ve also been busy creating a book this last year, and now getting it out there. Whew. I create first of all because I have to, for me (I think we’re made for this) and secondly for my audience of collectors, educators and friends.
Great quote! I used to write for many years & often was “secretly” writing to someone. On the other hand, my drawings etc. have been created for me. (Though I have items for sale, I create them for my own pleasure). Perhaps that is why I have taken to the visual arts so much more in the last few years. Also could be why my writing never quite gelled…interesting….Yes, a very provocative quotation.
I think that’s true for me too. Although I really like writing to share with others I think I mostly do it because it’s something I really enjoy doing. I coined a phrase quite some time ago: “Writing is a joy, not a job. Getting paid is just icing on the cake.” … I think all of us creative types, regardless of what it is, could say the same thing. Insert painting, acting, etc. … Great post!
Sorry I am so late participating, but I couldn’t let another Monday go by without me writing a Monday’s Muse.
