The master suite is the jewel of this home. It’s what made us interested in purchasing this house and until now we really haven’t done anything to decorate it. The suite consists of a sitting area, a bathroom, a walk in closet, and our bedroom. From the moment I laid eyes on this set of rooms, I have had a vision for them. The sitting area would be a retreat. A work space for creating, writing and letting the mind free itself. A quiet reading space that would embrace my appetite for books and stories. I saw a chandelier, shelves to hold my books, a small desk, somewhere to sit. I saw something striking on the walls. Color.
While I want this to be a work space, it’s not going to be an office. I am not going to file paperwork here or anything like that. It is in the master suite after all – with the bedroom. Bedrooms are meant to be restful spaces, cozy spaces, and spaces for sleepy snuggles. Our bedroom is built over top of the garage and that means it’s a little bit cool in there. It’s lovely in the summer but in winter I find myself longing to up the temp just a tad – especially coming out of the shower. Our tour starts as we come in the main door from the hall into the suite. On the left here’s what we see:
In the corner where the office chair is I’d like to put a comfy wing chair and ottoman. I’m looking for something I can sit in for an hour or so and be grounded for reading or writing on my laptop. The little table there will stay and will be a perfect spot to rest a cup of tea or a glass of wine.
To the right of the entrance door there’s a nice sized wall. This is where I’m going to put a small secretary desk. My mom found it at an antique shop in BC and so it has yet to make it’s journey to me but I have plans to paint it up and make it cute. The shelves that are there will likely be sent to hang out in the basement for a while.
Standing in the entrance and looking across the space I can see into the bedroom, into the ensuite and the closet door. Because there are 4 doorways onto this area I think I can get away with something really bold on the walls. This small wall between the bedroom and bathroom doors would be perfect for a large mirror and decorative something on the wall… faux deer head? Yes, I think so!
Moving into the bedroom now we see:
Across from the foot of the bed we see a nice big wall and this is where I want to hang an electric fireplace. Surrounded by shelving and a comfy bench this wall will offer loads of storage, cozy ambiance and a chance to up the textures with some fabric. I’m planning on doing this wall in the same color as the walls in the sitting area. It would be nice to change the curtains up too. Something lighter and longer is really needed.
Now that you’ve seen the ‘before’ shots I can get to work on the afters! My favorite part. I’m off to shop for paint. Our fireplace unit is on order and I can’t wait for it to get here. The chandelier is bought and waiting to go up. Things are rolling and the project is off to a great start!
