Over the weekend I spent some time with the TELUS team for their Day of Giving. After seeing what they’d done with Free the Children and We Day I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to get involved and be a part of their “We Give where We Live” initiative. A few other bloggers were there too and we spent the morning horsing around and picking weeds and planting flowers at Ronald McDonald house. The backs of my thighs are still screaming from the work, even though the morning went by super quickly and it didn’t feel like work at all!
Over 13000 TELUS team members and volunteers hit the streets to give back to their communities – that’s a lot of helping hands. I know that when we left Ronald McDonald house it was fresh and bright and decorated with living flowers. I can only imagine the difference made across the country as people set aside their own lives for one Saturday morning and spent a bit of time helping someone else.
It got me thinking of how much it means to me as a consumer when large companies give back. When I choose to give my business to a company like TELUS I know that my dollars are indirectly supporting these efforts and that makes me happy. Then today I hear that TELUS is investing 700 MILLION dollars in Alberta’s infrastructure – $125 for the Calgary area.
From the press release:
This year, TELUS’ infrastructure investment will advance our services for the benefit of Albertans, by:
· Connecting hundreds of new homes and businesses directly to fibre optic cable to radically increase internet speeds and capacity and power Optik TV. Called GPON, or Gigabit Passive Optical network, the technology offers customers Internet speeds up to 50 megabits per second and will enable incredibly fast Internet speeds in the future.
· Expanding the reach of TELUS’ healthcare solutions. TELUS now provides electronic medical records to 9,000 Canadian physicians across the country, supporting more than 25 million patient interactions each year. TELUS is in the midst of providing $1.3 million over three years to carry out research with the University of Alberta on the application of emerging technologies to improve patient care within the community.
· Installing dozens of new wireless sites enhancing coverage in urban areas to increase wireless data capacity, and dozens more extending coverage to rural communities and highway corridors. So far this year, TELUS has rolled out 4G LTE to more than 85 per cent of Albertans including highway #2 between Calgary and Edmonton, the Cold Lake region and the Lake Louise/Banff area.
· Further extending Optik TV service to reach nearly 90 per cent of Alberta households by the end of 2013. TELUS currently has 712,000 TV customers.
This makes me proud to be a TELUS customer. And I feel like they’re doing it right. Invest in us and we invest in them and round and round we go. Love it. What corporate giving initiatives do you support? Are there any other companies you feel are doing well in this area? Let me know and I’ll look into supporting them!
