Summer is over and the kids are back in school. Back to school time is always so hectic and there’s so much to buy and organize to prepare. But one thing that should be thought of at this time of year, and often isn’t is our first aid kits. Summer brings scraped knees and bug bites and sun burns and by the end of it our kits can be a little sparse. Now’s a great time to take a peek in there and see what’s lacking. Otherwise you’ll be like me and have nothing but empty bandage wrappers staring you back in the face.
Buying individual pieces for a first aid kit can be costly. Bandages, tapes, cold compresses, on and on and on it goes. The best route is to get a pre-made kit. This was $19.99 and it includes 150 pieces.
Even though it’s a great kit with lots in it, I asked the pharmacist what else I might want to put in there. He suggested:
- Bandages in different shapes
- Saline for cleaning wounds and
- Aloe for minor burns
He also reminded me that if there’s someone in our family or who regularly visits our house with a severe allergy (peanut, bee etc) we should stock an epipen too. Thankfully we don’t have anyone with allergies like this but it’s a great reminder! Yours could have been used for a bee sting over the summer and if so, you need to grab a replacement.
Here’s a shot of what’s in my kit. I added the Polysporin and the insect bite gel. I added Nexcare bandages in a few other shapes and the ‘Hurt Free’ antiseptic wash which I love for cleaning the dirt out of scrapes.
We keep our medication items like Benedryl and Advil in another spot that’s out of reach of the kids but if you keep yours in your kit make sure it’s somewhere where the kids can’t get at it. Our kit now lives in the pantry – most home injuries happen in the kitchen so this was a logical spot for us.
GOOD NEWS! I have a kit to give away! You can always use an extra one to toss in the trunk of your car or to take camping right? All you need to do to be entered is like my Facebook page and leave your email address. That’s it!
