The person who invented knitting is a freakin genius. How this person conceived that you could use two sticks to twirl a string into a cloth-like material I’ll never know.
When I was a kid, my Grandmother gave me a few brief lessons on the craft. I never did much with it but I’ve always held on to the thought that I’d continue to learn to knit. I’ve made a few simple pieces – scarves mostly and now I’ve completed my first attempt at using a knitting pattern. Until now, my knitting has consisted of only the basic knit stitch. Nothing more.
I decided to try out a dishcloth pattern and found this one, aptly named the Idiots Square. They turned out alright though, as you can see – the one on the lower right is quite a bit smaller than the other. I guess I have something to learn about gauge and tension.
If you want to try one yourself, I’d recommend this pattern as it was quick to learn, and complete in one day. I could imagine that if you were adept, you could whip one of these babies up in about an hour or so but I’m not there yet.
I also found these how-to knitting videos extreamly helpful. Check ’em out.

Hey, that’s pretty cool. Great work. I don’t know how to knit, but I did teach myself to crochet years ago. My teenager taught herself as well after I showed her how easy it is. I’ve always been intimindated by knitting… it looks hard to me. Guess I’m a chicken! LOL
very cool – love the colors!
You know, I never thought about the person who invented weaving. Indeed, pretty amazing, and more important to human history than all the conquerors about which so much is written.
I made these a little while ago. I love them. They are so quick and easy too.
I put up a post after making mine for incorporating these into a green gift.

My MIL knits blankets. I think in 2008 she completed 7-10 full size blankets of varying styles and colors. She’s thinking of making up some to sell once she is done with making one for everyone in her immediate and extended family. I just love the one she made for my DH, even though the one she made for me is very nice as well.
Every time she sits down to watch TV she has needle and yarn in hand…it’s pretty amazing what she does in a short time. Takes about 2-6 weeks to finish one depending on how many interruptions she has.
I find that when I do these kind of projects, the first time around I am thrilled that I actually did them. Then, after a while, I don’t like them any more, and that’s when my real creativity starts… I get inventive… cut up the original project and make something real cool with them, that’s a whole level up in creativity.
So, I’m gonnna stay tuned here with ya….
