Adding colour is one of the easiest ways to customize your home. When we moved into this builder’s beige new build house, one of the first things we did was add colour—on the walls, with our furnishings and with things like rugs and curtains. Interior colour choices are easier because there are so many products and styles to choose from, but what about exterior colour? If we want to add character with colour but don’t want to paint our home, then what are our options? With cookie-cutter neighbourhoods all looking the same, colour is a simple way to make sure your home stands out.
Driveway – there is no reason to stick to your basic concrete drive any longer. There are so many stamping, staining and resurfacing treatments out there to help you really make a statement. Now, I’m not suggesting you put in a yellow brick road, but almost any other treatment is game like these blue cobblestones.
Flower Pots – people often decorate the exterior of their homes with flowers but there’s a missed opportunity to add colour in considering the type of pot the flowers are planted in. Especially important over the winter months, a colourful planter housing an evergreen can make much more impact than a boring beige pot. Shop for some to fit your taste or take on a DIY to come up with some custom containers to accessorize your home.
Window Trim – when the time comes to replace your windows, think about the colour of the window frames. There is a new product for your PVC window frames called Renolit, which basically laminates a coloured film to the frame, giving you a variety of colour options. These window and door frames can provide a special pop of colour that will add definition and character to the façade of any home without having to turn to aluminum cladded window frames. Imagine your home with navy blue window frames—or maybe brick red? There you go – three spots you can add colour and personality to the outside of your home without having to repaint the entire house! Colour should be fun and allow you to show pride of ownership. Don’t feel like you have to keep your love of colour all hidden on the inside—the exterior of your home is a great place to showcase some style and personality, too!

Oooooooooh, good ideas!! The blue cobblestones are SO PRETTY. I think I may have to paint our front walkway. Goodbye grey!
But what if I want a yellow brick road? Haha, I love these ideas, and now I want to stencil my driveway and front walk way.
Well, if you do install a yellow brick road, make sure you stay on theme and add a scarecrow!
I so need to get rid of our builders beige! I never thought of paining the driveway. What a great idea! I love the contrast of the blue against the yellow leaves. I also like the idea of sprucing up window and door frames. I feel like an idiot for not thinking of these small changes that would probably make our house look so different!
My husband spent one day this weekend painting all of the trim, shutters and garage doors on the house – it is AMAZING and a huge huge huge difference in curb appeal. We went from a very dark brown to a greige-y (please don’t quiz me – I’m not good at this!) colour I am L-O-V-I-N-G.
I gotta get on this. I love the pic of the leaves btw. I want to frame it!!
