This has to be the easiest meal I’ve ever made in the crock pot. It really couldn’t be easier and I really enjoyed the texture of the cabbage and sausages after they were cooked all day. We’re lucky here in Calgary that we can get Spolumbo’s sausages. The chicken & apple are my personal favorite because they are so lean and flavorful. I will admit that I’m not the biggest fan of sausage, but my husband really enjoys them at dinner so the chicken sausages are a great compromise. The kids love them too because they have such a mild flavour.
Update: Now that we are no longer in Calgary we thought we would miss out on Spolumbo’s but we have been able to find them frozen at Safeway! Hurrah!
Crock Pot Braised Cabbage with Sausage and Rice
Prep time
Cook time
Total time
Serves: 4-6
Ingredients
- 1 onion sliced
- 1 cabbage sliced
- 1 large can diced tomatoes
- ¼ cup apple juice (I added this because I was using chicken & apple sausages...you could omit if you used a conflicting flavor sausage.)
- 1tsp celery salt
- 1tsp black pepper
- 4 to 6 large sausages
- Rice - enough for each person to have a serving
Instructions
- Layer ingredients into your crock pot in the order I have them listed above except the rice. Cook on low all day or on high for 4-6 hours. When dinner hour hits, cook your rice according to the usual method and serve on the side.
If you’re not a fan of rice, perogies would be especially good too!
YUM!! I wish I could get those sausages here! Sausages are a big hit with Adam, myself and Lauren. Maybe I’ll have to come visit you. I’ll bring the wine. 😉
I love crock pot meals, they are so easy to make and keep you out of the kitchen for hours every night. This looks absolutely delicious and as soon as I am off this cabbage soup diet, I am adding it to my list of things to make!
hhm..this does not sound good to me. I’m not a cabbage or sausage fan. But I’m really glad you found a yummy recipe that is easy to make. I LOVE my crockpot!
Mmmmmm . . . now that we’re all moved in to our new house, I’m seriously considering buying a crock pot. There are some great places that sell farmer sausage in my community and I would love to try that recipe. Now what type of wine would you pair that with?
Pair your wine based on the type of sausage you’re using. We used Chicken and Apple which would go with a nice fruity white like a Gewurztraminer. A spicy Italian sausage could be paired with a full bodied Red… Shiraz maybe?
This is perfect. Im trying to add more cabbage into our diet.
